Global Rock Challenge 2017

Fraserburgh Academy has now been competing in Global Rock challenge for a number of years.

Rock Challenge is an educational and aspirational performing arts competition for students in secondary schools. It communicates health and social education messages to teenagers in a positive and supportive environment.

The performance can be based on a theme of your choice and set to a soundtrack of available music and each performance must be between 5 and 8 minutes long.

The aim of Global Rock Challenge/Be Your Best Foundation is for students and their teachers to create and be involved in their own production from conceptualisation through to the live performance. The challenge is also to encourage young people to lead healthy lifestyles and to be their best without the need for tobacco, alcohol or other drugs.

Global rock involves a group of around 90 pupils representing Fraserburgh Academy. Their behaviour, dedication and commitment to the performance is a credit to Fraserburgh and we as teachers are very proud of the cast and crew.  This has been mentioned by our local Rotary Club who have donated money to previous performances – who said Fraserburgh Academy pupils were excellent role models and ambassadors for the youth of Fraserburgh.

Pupils have been excellent in fund raising over the years as the whole performance has to be financed by themselves which cover costs like costumes, make-up, set, buses to the performance etc. Fund raising events include: Coffee Mornings, Bingo Nights, Quiz Nights, Bag Pack, and Christmas Hamper Raffles.  Sponsorship has also been given by local businesses, local Gala’s and individuals throughout the years – for which we are very grateful.

There are a number of benefits involved in the experience of “Rock Challenge”:

  • Opportunities for working with other schools and year groups
  • Offers young people opportunity to meet other people with similar interests
  • Is a 100% drug and crime prevention vehicle
  • Builds life skills, allows better life choices
  • Develops personal learning and thinking skills
  • Improves teamwork and impacts the wider community
  • Improves self confidence

Global Rock is also a platform for ex-pupils and parents and community to come together once a week to help with set and costumes – a lot of people benefit as this is a great social evening.

Previous performances have included themes such as:

Lumos – Harry Potter

Sweet Delusion – Hansel and Gretel

Ugly Side of Beauty – Animal Cruelty

Magnitude 9.1 – Tsunami

Over the last 6 years Fraserburgh Academy has placed first in the North East of Scotland heat in Aberdeen. This then led us on to the Scottish Final in Dundee which is a major achievement by all concerned.
