National 5 Practical Metalworking


Three primary units of skills and ability are focussed on resulting in a number of projects.

BENCH SKILLS – focusses on precision marking out, hand tool use and finishing techniques.

MACHINE SKILLS – use of lathes and possible milling machines depending on ability and project being tackled.

THERMAL JOINING & FABRICATION – use of forge to shape metal as well as joining techniques such as brazing and welding.


All of these skills are crucial in attempting the final assignment which is worth 70% of the final grade for National 5.

A written exam is also included for the remaining 30%.
